Objective:
Climbing “involves strength, endurance, postural stability, technique, balance, coordination, route finding, and attention, as well as a number of psychological aspects beyond fear, which put high demands on the participant,”. Rock climbing is a great activity for children who are struggling with strength (hand strength, core strength, and leg strength), endurance, motor coordination and motor planning, cognitive skills, and sensory processing problems. Rock climbing walls are a fantastic sensory experience that is perfect to any sensory play environment. Each climbing experience offers a full body workout that supports proximal and hand strength and flexibility. Furthermore, climbing nurtures problem-solving abilities, increases spatial awareness and promotes fine and gross motor skills.

Benefits:
– Strengthening and endurance
Children develop hand and fingers strength as they grasp and hang onto holds of all different shapes and sizes (Figure 1). Different shapes and sizes make a great challenge for the child. Making way up to the top requires endurance, good hand strength , leg strength, and core strength. By routinely participating in climbing and engaging these muscles, one may improve their core and upper body strength which will assist in maintaining better posture and motor control. Good core muscle strength will provide a stable support base for fine motor activity like handwriting and cutting skills.

– Coordination and motor planning
Climbing helps kids develop bilateral coordination and motor planning skills because there is a built-in visual element to help guide them. Climbing required the use of both sides of the body together in an alternating pattern like right hand and right foot, followed by the left hand and left foot. They need to stabilize themselves with one foot/hand while motor planning how to grasp onto and step on the next holds with their other foot and hand. Moreover, coordinated eye and head movement helps the child to do tasks in the classroom such as copying from the board and reading across a book page.

– Cognitive skills
The child’s cognitive skills such as problem solving skills will be challenged through the rock climbing activity as it requires them to plan their movement properly. Besides that, learning to climb teaches the child the importance of following directions. Aside from that, climbing also assists in developing visual perception. Children who have problems with visual perception will have difficulty doing sorting activity, identifying color and shapes, build blocks, and performing matching games.

– Sensory processing
Through the rock climbing activity, the child will be provided with proprioceptive (sensory input to the muscles and joints) and vestibular input as they hoist themselves to climb up. Climbing develops the vestibular system, which takes in information and sends it to the brain, which in turns sends out a signal to help with balance. Other than that, through the use of visuals while climbing, eye-hand and eye-foot coordination also can be improved as the child must look at the next steps and hold themselves in a controlled position as they move from one hand and leg to the next.
